We asked Governor Rick Scott's staff to send us a copy of his schedule — in the office and on the campaign trail — so we could talk to him about their concerns.

Documents, compiled and recorded by taxpayer-paid staff, are public record and ought to be available for anyone in the state to see.

But the governor’s office wouldn’t turn them over, claiming the calendars — even those already sent to the public — are exempt from public disclosure.

Gov. Rick Scott has proclaimed to be a leader in support of affordable, quality healthcare for all patients. Well, if that’s true, then why is he denying HIV/AIDS patients the right to choose where they get their HIV care?

Positive Healthcare, a Medicaid managed health care plan run by AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF), provides critical health insurance coverage for people living with HIV in Florida. Gov. Scott has denied HIV?AIDS patients this coverage!

Here are the facts:

  • Nearly 5,000 people in Florida were infected with HIV in 2016 alone, which means one out of every eight new HIV infections in the United States occurred in Florida.
  • Florida ranks third in the nation with reported new HIV diagnosis.
  • Nearly 136,000 Floridians are estimated to be living with HIV, but one in six is still not aware of his or her HIV-positive status.
  • More than 30,000 Floridians currently living with HIV are not receiving care for their infection.

AHF’s Positive Healthcare is a part of the solution:

  • AHF has been an excellent provider of HIV care in Florida since 1999, always putting people before profits.
  • AHF’s Positive Healthcare provides a voice to people living with HIV and allows them to choose a medical provider they can trust and that can provide the life-saving care they need. If this critical coverage is eliminated, 2,000 patients living with HIV will have their care disrupted.

The reality is that Florida is the epicenter of the nation’s HIV epidemic. Governor Scott needs to give HIV patients the choice to choose where to get their care and stop padding the pockets of for-profit insurance companies.

AHF is a highly respected non-profit organization devoted to serving the needs of patients, especially those living with HIV, unlike the giant for-profit insurance companies. Governor Scott, one choice is not a choice… let the people choose!
